What are Gudgeons and Pintles?
What are Gudgeons and Pintles?
Pintles and Gudgeons comprise the hinging mechanism on outboard-mounted Rudders. Pintles always incorporate a Pin, Gudgeons always have a hole for a Pin, either may be attached to the rudder or to the Transom. In standard configuration, Pintles are attached to the Rudder, and Gudgeons are attached to the Transom.
What are rudder Gudgeons?
In any case, the fitting with the hole is referred to as a gudgeon. They are used to attach the rudder to the boat so that it can swing freely. The rudder can then be turned with the tiller. There must be at least two gudgeon/pintle sets for stability in the rudder’s attachment to the transom.
What is a pintle on a boat?
A pintle is a pin or bolt, usually inserted into a gudgeon, which is used as part of a pivot or hinge. Other applications include pintle and lunette ring for towing, and pintle pins securing casters in furniture.

What holds a rudder in place?
Stock failure: Most rudders are constructed around a solid or hollow stainless steel or aluminum stock. This tube or bar connects the rudder to the boat’s steering mechanism. In the case of a spade rudder, it also attaches the rudder to the boat. Stocks can fail in several ways, all related to inadequate strength.
Why are rudders at the back?
And the lift generated (rudder force) is proportional to the velocity of water falling on it. So if a rudder is placed at the aft of the propeller, the increased velocity of the propeller outflow results in a greater lift force. It is only for this reason that a rudder is placed aft of the propeller.
